Infections of the digestive tract are common. Most (such as gastroenteritis or food poisoning) last only a few days and resolve by themselves. These acute infections can cause fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Other more long-lasting infections may be caused by gut parasites and tend to cause milder symptoms.
What are the causes of acute gastroenteritis?
Most cases of acute gastroenteritis (or food poisoning, stomach bug) are caused by viruses such as norovirus or rotavirus that cause a temporary infection and damage to the lining of the small intestine. Viral gastroenteritis spreads easily from person to person. Certain bacteria such as Salmonella and Campylobacter can also cause acute gastroenteritis.
What are the symptoms of acute gastroenteritis?
Gastroenteritis can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and crampy abdominal pain. It can also cause flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. There is a danger that the diarrhea and vomiting may cause dehydration which can cause thirst, weakness and dizziness, and reduced urination.
How is acute gastroenteritis treated?
Most cases of acute gastroenteritis will settle within a week. During the infection, it is important to rest and keep well hydrated. Sports drinks, oral rehydration salts, and salty crackers can help the body replace fluids and electrolytes. If you can eat, stick to bland foods for a few days and avoid fatty food or dairy products. It is also important to practice good handwashing to reduce the chances of passing the infection to others. Antibiotics are usually not helpful in treating gastroenteritis but a course of probiotics may help shorten the infection.
Do I need to see a doctor for acute gastroenteritis?
Mild cases of gastroenteritis will settle by themselves with rest and rehydration without the need for medical intervention. You make an appointment to see Dr Neil if you develop bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, high fever, or symptoms that do not get better for more than a week. If you develop symptoms of dehydration you should seek urgent medical attention.
What parasites can cause gut infections?
A number of parasites including giardia, ameba, and worms can cause gut infections. These infections are often chronic and can cause a variety of symptoms including diarrhea, gas and bloating, weight loss, and fatigue. They are usually diagnosed with stool tests. Infection with gut parasites often needs a course of antibiotics or other anti-parasite treatments
