FAQs

What is Gastroenterology?

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and the liver. As a Gastroenterologist, Dr Neil has had dedicated training and extensive experience in the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the esophagus (gullet), stomach, small intestine, colon (large intestine), liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

Why should I see a Gastroenterologist?

If you have symptoms that suggest a problem with your digestive system it is a good idea to get your digestive health checked – for example, acid reflux, bloating, blood in your stool, or a change in bowel habits.  You may also want to make an appointment to get treatment for a previously diagnosed digestive health or liver condition such as inflammatory bowel disease, IBS, celiac disease, fatty liver, or gastro-esophageal reflux disease.  Gastroenterologists can also arrange screening for colon cancer and other cancers affecting the digestive system

What is the difference between a Consultant Gastroenterologist and a Specialist Gastroenterologist?

In Dubai, doctors are either called a ‘Consultant’ or a ‘Specialist’.  The two terms can be quite confusing and in other parts of the world, the two terms are often used interchangeably.   In the UAE the two different titles reflect the level of training and the years of experience of a doctor.  Consultants are usually more senior and experienced doctors.  A Specialist may apply to be licensed as a Consultant after completing the required years of experience.  Dr Neil is a Gastroenterology Consultant.
